PANDI and Hasanuddin University Collaborate to Advance Lontara Bugis Script Standardization in the Digital Era

Makassar, Indonesia – The Indonesia Internet Domain Name Registry (PANDI), in collaboration with the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at Hasanuddin University, held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the development of Label Generation Rules (LGR) and the Draft Indonesian National Standard (RSNI) for the Lontara Bugis script in Makassar.
This collaboration marks an important step toward preserving Indonesia's cultural heritage while expanding the use of traditional scripts in the digital landscape. Through this initiative, PANDI and Hasanuddin University aim to ensure that the Lontara Bugis script remains accessible, relevant, and adaptable to modern technology without compromising its original cultural identity.
Advancing the Standardization of the Lontara Bugis Script
The Lontara script is an important part of Indonesia's cultural heritage, particularly among the Bugis and Makassar communities in South Sulawesi. As digital transformation continues to accelerate, standardization is essential to ensure that traditional scripts can be consistently supported across digital devices and platforms.
The FGD addressed several key technical aspects, including font standardization, keyboard layout development, character compatibility with Unicode standards, and the potential integration of the Lontara Bugis script into the Domain Name System (DNS).
These standardization efforts are expected to support broader adoption of the script across education, digital communication, software development, and internet services.
Unicode compatibility is particularly important to ensure that Lontara Bugis characters can be accurately recognized, displayed, and processed across different digital platforms.
Expanding Opportunities for Lontara Bugis in Domain Names
One of the main objectives of this collaboration is the development of Label Generation Rules (LGR), a set of technical rules that defines how characters from a particular script can be used in domain name labels.
The development of LGR represents an important step toward enabling the potential use of Lontara Bugis characters within the international domain name ecosystem.
Through standardized rules, script characters can be evaluated based on technical requirements, security considerations, and compatibility with domain name systems.
The outcomes of the FGD will serve as a foundation for preparing an LGR proposal for submission to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Meanwhile, the Draft Indonesian National Standard (RSNI) will proceed through the standardization process under the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN).
Together, these initiatives are expected to strengthen the technical foundation for the use of the Lontara Bugis script at both national and international levels.
Preserving Cultural Heritage Through Digital Innovation
The standardization of the Lontara Bugis script is not intended to alter its traditional characteristics or cultural significance. Instead, it seeks to create new opportunities for the script to remain relevant, accessible, and widely used in an increasingly digital society.
Through this collaboration, PANDI and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at Hasanuddin University bring together linguistic and cultural expertise with the technical requirements of modern internet infrastructure.
This initiative demonstrates that cultural preservation goes beyond documentation and education. It also involves integrating traditional heritage into digital technologies to ensure its continued use by future generations.
With stronger technical standards, the Lontara Bugis script is expected to gain greater opportunities for adoption across various digital applications, allowing Indonesia's linguistic and cultural diversity to remain visible in the digital world.
PANDI's Commitment to Bringing Nusantara Scripts into the Digital World
As the registry responsible for managing Indonesia's .id domain, PANDI continues to support the development of an inclusive internet ecosystem that reflects the country's rich cultural and linguistic diversity.
The collaboration with Hasanuddin University represents another step toward connecting the preservation of traditional Nusantara scripts with the advancement of internet technology.
Through the development of LGR and RSNI, the Lontara Bugis script is expected to gain a stronger foundation for sustainable use and future integration into digital systems.
Ultimately, preserving Nusantara scripts is not only about protecting the heritage of the past. It is also about ensuring that Indonesia's cultural identity continues to thrive and has a meaningful place in the country's digital future.
